Kentucky Derby Travel Tips from The Luxury Bandit’s First-Time Experience

Hello Lovely People, and hope all is well! I recently attended the Kentucky Derby for the very first time, and let me just say… it did not disappoint. The Luxury Bandit finally made it to the race famously dubbed “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports®.” Watching those magnificent horses thunder around the track had long been on my bucket list, and the fact that it was also my first time visiting Kentucky made it all the more memorable.

Plan Your Kentucky Derby Weekend Like a Pro

Let’s start with the basics. If you’re planning to attend the Kentucky Derby, know that it’s more than a one-day affair. The festivities stretch out across the weekend, and each day has its own traditions and energy. Booking accommodations early is non-negotiable. Louisville fills up fast, and rates surge as race day approaches. We stayed at a hotel that turned out to be an absolute gem. Not only was it stylish and centrally located, but it also carried many of the same Derby-themed souvenirs I later saw at inflated prices at the race. Pro tip: compare hotel gift shop prices before heading out for keepsakes.

Breakfast AF: A Must-Visit Spot in Louisville

Now, let’s talk about food. The moment I landed, I was ready for something indulgent, so I headed to Breakfast AF, a cozy eatery in the Germantown neighborhood. The menu was a brunch lover’s dream, sweet, savory, and everything in between. I went in hungry and came out impressed. I even did a full review of our top menu picks, which you can read by tapping here. If you’re planning your trip, make this your first stop. You won’t regret it.

Score Stylish Derby Souvenirs Without Breaking the Bank

Being a Luxe-for-Less type of girl, I had my eye on Kentucky Derby souvenirs. Imagine my surprise when I saw simple branded hoodies going for over $200 at the racetrack. Spoiler alert: you do not have to spend that much. Local grocery chains like Kroger had elegant tumblers, polos, and even bourbon chocolates. Yes, bourbon chocolates, for a fraction of the price. These stores often stock officially licensed merchandise too, so you’re not sacrificing authenticity. And they make great last-minute gifts or keepsakes to bring back home.

Dress to Impress: What to Wear to the Kentucky Derby

Let’s take a moment to talk Derby fashion, because it is absolutely part of the experience. The outfits were nothing short of dazzling; pastel dresses, bold hats, tailored suits, you name it. For women, think elegant silhouettes with eye-catching accessories. For men, seersucker suits and crisp hats were the vibe. But here’s a tip I wish I’d known ahead of time: it’s tradition to wear pink on opening day in honor of breast cancer awareness. I happened to wear pink accessories that day by coincidence, but next year I’ll be more intentional. Plan accordingly.

Expect Rain, Skip the Umbrella, Pack a Poncho

Here’s the thing about the Kentucky Derby: it often rains. And umbrellas? Completely banned at Churchill Downs. Instead, I packed a reusable poncho that was lightweight, transparent, and stylish enough to not ruin my outfit. It kept me dry and still let my look shine. I’ve added it to my Amazon Storefront so you can grab one for yourself. Whether you need it for Derby weekend, a music festival, or your emergency kit. It’s a wardrobe must.

Coming Soon: A Full Cost Breakdown for Attending the Derby

There’s still so much more I want to share, like the true cost of attending the Derby, including flights, accommodations, dining, fashion, and event access. I’ll be dropping Part Two soon with all the details. Until then, save this guide for your next luxe escape to Louisville.
